Pakistan’s telecom sector continued to show strong growth in 2024–25, with total subscribers crossing 200 million and broadband connections exceeding 150 million, according to the Annual Report released by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority.

The report shows that telecom companies generated revenues of more than Rs. 1 trillion during the year, marking a 12 percent increase compared to last year.

The sector contributed Rs. 402 billion to the national exchequer.

Investment in the telecom sector remained healthy, with foreign and local investment reaching $838 million, up 9 percent year-on-year. PTA said continued network expansion and supportive policy measures helped maintain investor confidence.

On the infrastructure side, telecom services now cover 92 percent of Pakistan’s geographical area. Broadband penetration has crossed 60 percent, while 95 percent of mobile networks have shifted to 4G technology. Internet usage also reached a new high, with total data consumption recorded at 27,727 petabytes during the year.

The report noted improvements in international connectivity, with four new submarine cables added to strengthen Pakistan’s global internet links.

Local manufacturing also made progress, as around 95 percent of mobile phones sold in Pakistan are now produced locally. Smartphones accounted for 68 percent of locally manufactured devices.

PTA said Pakistan’s global cyber security ranking has improved further, while stronger consumer protection measures helped reduce complaints by 13 percent during the year.

Overall, the report reflects steady expansion in digital access, investment and service quality across Pakistan’s telecom sector.
