Pakistan Signs New Six-Year Nuclear Cooperation Framework with IAEA

Pakistan and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) have signed the fifth Country Programme Framework (CPF), setting out technical cooperation priorities for 2026 to 2031.

The agreement was signed on the sidelines of the IAEA General Conference in Vienna by Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) Chairman Dr. Raja Ali Raza Anwar and IAEA Deputy Director General Hua Liu, who heads the agency’s Department of Technical Cooperation.

According to the IAEA, the CPF serves as a medium-term plan that outlines areas where nuclear technology transfer and cooperation resources will be focused to support national development.

Under the new framework, Pakistan will prioritize five sectors: food and agriculture, human health and nutrition, climate change and water resource management, nuclear power and radiation, and nuclear safety.

The IAEA said its assistance will strengthen Pakistan’s capacity in key areas such as emergency preparedness, radioactive waste management, safe transport, and the application of artificial intelligence in regulatory processes.

Pakistan, a member of the IAEA since 1957, has previously worked with the agency on multiple peaceful nuclear technology projects.

Dr. Anwar noted that the signing of the framework reaffirms Pakistan’s commitment to the peaceful use of nuclear science and technology, emphasizing its role in advancing sustainable development goals.
