Water Projects Worth Rs. 70 Billion Announced for Faisalabad

The Punjab government has kicked off two major water infrastructure projects in Faisalabad, with a combined value exceeding Rs. 70 billion.

The initiative was discussed during a high-level meeting chaired by Punjab Housing, Urban Development and Public Health Secretary Noor-ul-Amin Mengal. WASA Faisalabad Managing Director Sohail Qadir Cheema presented a detailed briefing on the projects.

According to the briefing, the city will see the development of a surface water treatment plant and a wastewater treatment plant. The surface water project is estimated to cost Rs. 14.6 billion, while the wastewater facility will require over Rs. 56 billion.

Both projects are being financed through international donor agencies. The surface water treatment plant is expected to be completed by June 2027, while the wastewater treatment facility is scheduled for July 2028.

Secretary Mengal highlighted the impact of these projects, noting they would collectively treat up to 63 million gallons of water daily. More than 700,000 residents in Faisalabad’s eastern areas are expected to benefit, with over 56,000 households gaining access to clean drinking water.

“The treated wastewater will be fit for agricultural use, supporting environmental sustainability and better resource management,” he added.

He further revealed that in the future, a total of three wastewater treatment plants are planned for Faisalabad to accommodate the city’s rising population and expanding urban needs.
