The government has approved the “New Gwadar Shipyard Mega Project” under the guidance of Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif. A Project Management Cell (PMC) has been activated to leverage all available resources for the comprehensive development of the Gwadar Port under the second phase of CPEC.
After allocating 200 million rupees for the formation of the PMC, relevant appointments will be made to ensure operations are conducted according to the established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
A Gwadar Port Authority official told Gwadar Pro that the new modern shipyard in Gwadar will encourage the commercial shipbuilding and repair industry, create new job opportunities, and promote economic development.
He added that with the land dispute ready to be resolved, tenders will be issued for international companies to participate according to the relevant Terms of Reference (TORs).
The GDA official mentioned that 750 acres of land have been earmarked for the new shipyard project. He further stated that besides providing essential dry docking facilities to cargo ships arriving at the Gwadar port, the shipyard will also provide services for the construction of new ships.
Recently, Chairman of the Senate Standing Committee on Defence Production, Senator Muhammad Abdul Qadir, emphasized the strategic importance of the Gwadar Shipyard mega project for Pakistan. He stated that the project must start this year, with preference given to local experts and workers from Balochistan for employment opportunities.
He also mentioned that the Gwadar Shipyard Mega Project would be equipped with modern technology and would establish Pakistan as a prominent player in the global shipbuilding industry with international standards.
