First Biogas Plant in Pakistan Launched Under Suthra Punjab Program

Provincial Minister for Local Government Zeeshan Rafique inspected the pilot biogas plant at Lakhodair dumping site on Wednesday as part of the Suthra Punjab Waste-to-Value Program.

During the visit, Secretary Local Government Shakeel Ahmed and DG Suthra Punjab Authority Babar Saheb Din accompanied the minister.

Rafique reviewed the plant’s operations and issued instructions for further improvements. He received a detailed briefing on all phases of the Waste-to-Value initiative and ongoing electricity generation projects.

The minister said the program aims to convert thousands of tons of daily waste into energy and other useful products.

He highlighted that the pilot biogas project is Pakistan’s first successful initiative to produce bio-CNG from organic waste, beginning with waste collected during last year’s Eid-ul-Azha. Previously, disposal of waste incurred high costs, but now it will generate revenue.

Rafique praised the Suthra Punjab Authority team and noted interest from Pak Suzuki in producing fertilizer from organic waste, while proposals for waste-based construction bricks are also being evaluated.

He added that the program’s scope will expand in phases under the guidance of CM Maryam Nawaz.
