Right-Sizing So Far A Big Flop As Govt Targets Only Small Posts Instead of Senior Positions

The federal government’s rightsizing drive has delivered poor results, with only 38,692 posts abolished or declared redundant, saving Rs. 36.3 billion. Despite this, just two top-tier BS-22 posts are being eliminated.

Of the total posts affected, only 1,102 are from BS-17 to BS-22: 2 in BS-22, 2 in BS-21, 36 in BS-20, 99 in BS-19, 203 in BS-18, and 760 in BS-17. An additional 102 posts in these grades were declared redundant, none in BS-22 or BS-21.

Most cuts occurred in lower roles: 30,968 posts abolished and 7,724 declared redundant in BS-1 to BS-16.

The figures were disclosed during a Cabinet Committee on Rightsizing meeting chaired by Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb.

The committee reviewed proposals from its subcommittee, including plans to restructure the Ministry of Railways and streamline the Ministry of Maritime Affairs.

Aurangzeb reiterated that rightsizing is part of reforms aimed at efficiency and accountability. Ministries were directed to finalize implementation plans and align structures with performance indicators.
